UNCG at The Citadel

In a game of spurts, UNCG countered The Citadel’s sharpshooting (47%) by forcing 32 turnovers, including the one shown above where after a bogus foul call on Isaiah Miller near the beginning of the second half, Zay immediately took the ball on a lazy pass and laid it up for two points.

And that sums up the 2nd half for UNCG. Defense won this game as we took 74 shots versus Citadel’s 51, and grabbed 17 steals versus 8.

FT percentage has been steadily improving this year also: we shot 12-16 for 75%.

Isaiah Miller

Zay was forced to sit most of the first half, tallying only 9 minutes before the break. That was bad news for The Citadel because it got him fired up. He scored 7 points in the first 1:09 to give UNCG the lead for good in the game. 6-13 FG (1-3 3PT), 1-2 FT, 2 assists, 3 steals, 2 turnovers.

James Dickey

Recorded another double-double with 19 points & 12 rebounds in 26 minutes. 8-14 FG, 3-4FT, 3 steals, 2 turnovers. Stats have him 0-1 3PT but we all know that one is wrong.

Angelo Allegri

Steady night for Gelo. 4-10 FG (2-4 3PT), 3-3 FT, 1 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 turnovers.

Big Mo

Off night for Mo offensively with 0-3 shooting, 1-2 FT, 7 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals, 1 turnover. And took a few charges if I remember correctly.

Kaleb Hunter

Kaleb did most of his work off the ball. 3-9 FG (0-3 3PT), 2-2 FT, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals, 1 block, 3 turnovers.

Malik Massey

Decent night for the senior. Not great, but not bad, except for those turnovers again. 3-10 (2-7 3PT), 2-3 FT, 1 rebound, 1 assist, 2 steals, 3 turnovers.

Michael Hueitt Jr

Good shooting night for Hueitt, but he’s the third Spartan with unacceptable turnovers. 3-7 FG (3-6 3PT), 2 rebounds, 1 steal, 3 turnovers.

Keyshaun Langley

Non-factor with only 3 minutes but was efficient while he was in. 1-2 from beyond the arc.

Bas Leyte

Bas is showing signs of greatness with some of his moves. I like his ability to catch the ball on the run and turn toward the basket while still in control. In 11 minutes, 1-3 FG (0-1 3PT), 4 rebounds.

Kobe Langley

Kobe is still getting his feet wet after returning from his injury. 0-3 shooting, 1-2 FT, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal.

Kyrin Galloway – Did not play (injured).

Khyre Thompson – Did not play.

Ryan Tankelewicz – Did not play.

Game Summary

Some Takeaways From This Game:

  1. Defense definitely travels. We can win road games left and right with defense.
  2. Hueitt has the quickest release in the NCAA.
  3. Bas is improving every game.
  4. Dickey is STILL getting better, being more aggressive with the ball around the basket. Use to be he’d fake 3-4 times before passing the ball. Now he snakes his way to the basket like a taller version of Isaiah. Great for us, dangerous for opponents.
  5. Thank God I won’t have to hear Zane Najdawi say “um” into the microphone any more this season. And I think the normal commentator was talking into a towel. That part of the game was more excruciating then seeing Citadel have a 1-point halftime lead because I knew we’d surge in the 2nd half … and I knew I’d still have to hear 34 more “ums” before the game ended.
